A gourmet walk that also raises awareness
Since 2016, the Alternative Gourmet Walk (MGA) has been organised by several NGOs involved in development cooperation, as well as organisations active in environmental protection in Luxembourg. Each year’s event features a unique route, inviting participants to explore some of the country’s most beautiful natural areas.
To celebrate its 10th edition, the MGA has teamed up with the ‘Luxembourg Urban Garden (LUGA)’ exhibition to follow its discovery trail right in the heart of Luxembourg City. The route included the LUGA Science Hub in the Pétrusse Valley, the Upper Town’s municipal park, the LUGA Lab in Pfaffenthal, and the Alzette Valley.
This edition was coordinated by CELL and LUGA, in collaboration with several partners: SOS Faim, Iles de Paix Luxembourg, Frères des Hommes, Chrétiens pour le Sahel, and ASTM/CITIM.
Nearly a hundred participants took part in this experience, which combined reflection with culinary enjoyment. Throughout the event, they were made aware of issues such as simplicity, cooperation, and human rights, in line with the theme of the walk: The Ideas Laboratory. Whilst enjoying a four-course menu prepared by MESA, the starter was accompanied by a culinary workshop on wild plants led by SOS Faim.
As part of the reform of Global Citizenship Education (GCE), which has shaken up the entire development NGO sector, several awareness-raising initiatives have been analysed and reviewed with a view to improving our practices. The Alternative Gourmet Walk is one of the activities that has benefited from this in-depth evaluation and the lessons learnt.
In particular, it was concluded that the Alternative Gourmet Walk stands out for its unusual and fun concept, offering a positive and much-appreciated experience. The format of short but rich activities, combined with sustainable food, remains appealing. The walk also succeeds in attracting new audiences. Organising the MGA remains a substantial undertaking, but there are avenues for improving efficiency and ensuring its long-term viability that are worth exploring.
