Training young people for tomorrow’s sustainable agriculture
Alliance pour la Formation d’Agriculture de Nouvelle Génération (Alliance for Next Generation Agriculture Education) (ALFANG) in SENEGAL
The Alliance pour la Formation d’Agriculture de Nouvelle Génération (Alliance for Next Generation Agriculture Education) (ALFANG) is a Senegalese association founded in 2015. It brings together players committed to the development of the Kaolack and Fatick regions, with a clear objective: to train and professionally integrate young people who have dropped out of school into agricultural and livestock trades.
At the heart of this mission, ALFANG has set up a unique training system built around two complementary entities:
- The Centre de Formation Agricole Solidaire (CFAS) for theoretical training,
- The Ferme d’Application des Pratiques Agricoles Innovantes (FAPAI) for practical application.
Located on a 5-hectare site in Keur Mbaye Maty (Diossong commune), the centre welcomes young people annually for a 6 to 12-month cycle. More than 250 young people have already been trained since 2015, acquiring technical skills (market gardening, arboriculture, poultry farming, fattening…) but also in leadership, civics, business management, and agricultural entrepreneurship.
2024: A year focused on the environment and civic commitment
Thanks to the support of SOS Faim, ALFANG intensified its actions in 2024, particularly on the environmental and civic fronts. Three flagship initiatives marked the year:
- Environmental Citizens’ Holidays: 20 students took part in a week-long immersion program to discover nature, local biodiversity and how to protect it. An educational initiative that raises ecological awareness among the very young.
- Reforestation days: The second edition mobilized 20 relay trainers and enabled planting in six neighbouring villages, symbolizing ALFANG’s concrete commitment to the fight against deforestation.
- Arbor Day: This event brought together 125 participants to raise awareness of the vital role of trees in preserving ecosystems.
These actions reinforce the association’s global approach, which combines vocational training, active citizenship and ecological commitment.
Promising prospects
In 2024, ALFANG continued to strengthen its educational and reception infrastructures, with the construction of a library, a multi-purpose hall, huts for ecotourism, as well as an apiary, an aviary and a botanical nursery.
At the same time, the association welcomed 21 trainees from the Instituts Supérieurs d’Enseignement Professionnel (Higher Institutes of Professional Education) (ISEP) for ongoing training sessions in the field, fostering the exchange of knowledge and opening up to other youth profiles.
Finally, the year was marked by preparations for the arrival of the 8ᵉ cohort of young learners, whose training began in January 2025. To better structure its actions, ALFANG set up an operational coordination team, guided by a procedure manual ensuring consistency and quality in the implementation of its activities.
